MEDIA LITERACY UNIT 1 - CONSUMER AWARENESS: Our World
We find ourselves in a world driven by consumption and the media used to create an awareness within ourselves of what we 'need' to consume.  Our introduction to media literacy, sees us concentrating on the various techniques advertisers use to make commercials and public service announcements effective.  From which, a deeper understanding of consumer awareness and media literacy will is formed.

ORAL UNIT 1 - PERSUASIVE WRITING: Rant Writing
This unit on persuasive writing focuses on the power of persuasion found within our rants.  A rant allows for all to explore a topic that interests them while honing their writing and oral presentation skills, with a particular focus on confidence and clarity.
Rant writing is an engaging way to bring public speaking and persuasive writing into the classroom.  Students rant and complain to each other daily, why not channel that creative energy into some high-quality writing?  Rants are an engaging way to get students writing and sharing their thoughts and opinions in the classroom.

READING UNIT 1 - SHORT STORIES: 'The Hockey Sweater'
Here is where we engage with non-fiction literature, predominantly in the form of relevant news articles.
One of the finest things about the news is that it is always evolving before us.  We are immersed in the news and thus can relate to great deal of what is placed before us.  Particularly in this unit.  Through the reading and discussion of such news articles, classroom engagement will remain high, providing a fine environment for us all to gain background knowledge, practice our reading, writing and analysis skills as well as well share our thoughts on current affairs relevant to our society and time.

READING UNIT 2 - 'The Hatchet'
Leading on from our short story unit, here we use Gary Paulsen's novel to initially develop our comprehension skills.  We then turn our focus to sequencing, main idea, plot development, summary, drawing conclusions, inference, predicting, theme, understanding vocabulary and interpretation of literary devices.
Paulsen's writing provides the perfect backdrop for developing our knowledge of story elements and figurative language, and so these also form part of the unit.
We're aided in the planning of our answers to  constructed response questions through the use of graphic organizers, where we will also be required to verify answers with the text.

WRITING & GRAMMAR UNIT 1 - SENTENCE STRUCTURE & PARAGRAPH WRITING
Writing is an essential skill.  Whether it be in our profession, in the classroom or while following our interests; writing is all around us and key to most we do.  Writing is the primary basis upon which a student's work, learning and intellect will be judged—from the class, to the community, to the workplace.  Writing equips us with communication and thinking skills, while fostering our ability to explain and refine our ideas to others and ourselves.
This unit sees us strengthen the backbone of our written communication skills, for which the rest of the year will form around.
